Eliot
Porter
(1901-1990)
Fine Art, Landscape, Nature
|
Biography: Eliot Porter trained as a biochemist, and in
his colour landscape we often see a desire to precisely and closely
study natural objects and their place in the ecosystem. Porter
was one of the first photographers to work almost entirely with
colour photography, making use of the dye transfer process to
produce exquisite and long-lasting prints.
Porter was also a great bird photographer, as well as studying
birds and devoting great efforts towards nature conserrvation.
Like Ansel Adams he supported the Sierra Club, founded in California
in 1892 to preserve the wilderness areas, and his pictures (as
well as Adams's) featured in the Sierra Club publications.
His work was extenisively published during his lifetime and he
produced 26 monographs. The major collection of his work is in
the Amon Carter Museum at Fort Worth, Texas.
