Profotos Staff Evaluation:
Photomacrography takes on a
whole new look within the portfolio of Denis Crawford. Within
Denis' porftolio are several stunning examples of insects and
wildlife, which are viewed on a whole new level through his lenses.
denis' work in photography began with his education at RMIT
in Australia, where he received an honours degree in applied
science. Since his graduation from RMIT, Denis has: travelled
to Antarctica with an archeological team from Australia to document
specimens recovered on the expedition; published a book on live
entomological specimens, entitled "Backyard Insects";
worked for several major clients in Australia seeking his brilliant
scientific images, and much more. Denis' business, Graphic Science,
is at the forefront of photomacography of insects in Australia
and elsewhere.
while Denis' main goal in photography is to produce scientific
images for documentation, he does a great job in creating beautfiul
works of art at the same time. The image on this page is a great
example of Denis' aesthetic work in photography. This image of
the top of the Sorsdal Glacier in Antarctica is beautifully composed.
The wide angle lens creates an exaggerated feeling of depth,
while the complementary contrast provided by the warm yellows
and organges of the sky and cold blue of the snow creates excellent
color balance. Finally, the relatively small size of the person
in the image creates a great sense of scale and feeling of asymmetrical
balance. This image is just one example of many great images
which are included in Denis' portfolio.
