Pakistan native, Farah Mahbub,
is an incredible self-taught photographer who's prints are nothing
short of amazing. Farah's work in photography began in 1988 and
it continues to this day through self-led exhibitions and freelance
work in Pakistan and abroad.
What is really amazing about Farah's work is the beauty of
her alternative process prints. In her biography, Farah states
that she learned to do alternative process printing through books
and magazines. Some of the processes employed in Farah's work
are very difficult to master and it is truly amazing that she
has learned to do this on her own.
Aside from the magnificent quality of her prints, Farah's
photography is wonderful as well. Our staff especially enjoyed
viewing Farah's alternative process images, as they convey a
sense of mystery and true impressionism.

Photographer!,So, I guess someone out there is probably wondering who, what and when. Now that you know the name, here is a bit more for the extra curious types…
Of thirty-five years of my life, I have been a photographer for the last 12 years. Born, raised and educated in Karachi, Pakistan, I got into photography in 1988. Being self taught, I have learned mostly from books, magazines and libraries found locally or obtained through friends and relatives from abroad.
In the early 90's, I came across an amazing American magazine, Camera & Darkroom (previously called Darkroom Photography), which not only encouraged me to have my own little darkroom one day, but was my first exposure to Alt-Process images.
This left me wondering how in the world I was going to explore these processes in Pakistan. Allah be praised, for I slowly learned photography, moving on to B/W possessing and printing.
Now after all these years - with the help of notes saved from magazines, tech. books and the internet - I am able to print Alt images. Sadly, the magazine stopped publication in Sept. 1995.
On the whole, life has been wonderful and photography has been a complete high. Hues was my third solo exhibition, a culmination of nearly three years of work, and already
I have plans to travel in search of fresh images, and to experiment with further techniques and processes.
Presently I am teaching at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, while also freelancing as a photographer. Finally, an affirmation, I love my faith, my country,
and sometimes the crazy people. Can't believe you actually had the patience to read till the end. Ahem! Thank you for the web-ified visit.
