The darkness of night is not usually the time when we see photographers running around in the streets photographing. Most photographers head out the door with their equipment in hand when the sun rises, and return home when the sun sets. These photographers who have never photographed between dawn and dusk are missing out on a lot.
Matthew Lennert is a photographer, who is far from average. He is a photographer who explores the light and shapes of the night-time. The dark hours are Matthew's favorite time to create his works of art, which are quite beautiful and well produced.
Few photographers at Profotos have images of the night included within their portfolios, let alone an entire portfolio of them. Matthew's portfolio is comprised of only night time images.
Matthew's images of buildings, bridges and lights are very thought provoking and surreal in many ways. Working in black and white, Matthew is able to produce images which exhibit a great interpretation of the form and shape of objects. This lack of color creates mysterious and surreal moods within Matthew's images, which are incredible works of art.
These images of the night are absolutely astonishing - take your time and enjoy what Matthew Lennert has to offer.,The darkness of night is not usually the time when we see photographers running around in the streets photographing. Jose State University and The Academy of Art College
in San Francisco to become a commercial photographer.
Upon graduating, he traveled the traditional route of
apprenticeship by assisting established photographers
in San Francisco, Miami and Atlanta for over six
years. He began his own studio in 1992 and within two
years he lost all interest in working for hire. "My
love of the art form developed as a child was being
poisoned by the quest to make money. So, I closed my
studio and returned to photography as my vehicle of
personal expression rather than making it a business," says Lennert.
Lennert believes that photography is a way to study
the philosophy of life. "I read somewhere recently
that photography is a dialogue with self that helps
you grow. Confronting myself, my fears and what I
believe is the reality that all human beings must go
through life ultimately by themselves is what my
photography is about. I use my photographs as a means
of exploring myself and knowing more about who I am.
Over time, I have become extremely comfortable with
feelings that I think we all tend to avoid on one
level or another. I have found night photography to be
my ultimate spiritual experience because it allows me
to achieve a quiet peace that transcends into my
work."
Lennert notes that people who view his photographs can
experience the beauty of places they would not
normally go to. It is a select few who are willing to
endure the late nights, long exposures of up to a few
hours and the potential danger that comes with the
passion for creating night photographs. The night
converts something mundane into something
magnificent.
Lennert has had three solo exhibitions and
participated in several group exhibitions since 1996.
His work has been collected by individuals and
businesses. He recently returned permanently to the
Bay Area after 10 years in Atlanta. He is currently
preparing for the publishing of his first monograph
entitled, Stealing the Night.
