Photographs of trees, lakes, wildlife, and mountains are pretty. They are soothing. But they do not speak to my sensibilities. Except for brief jaunts to the country, nature does not form part of my daily experience.
I live in downtown Toronto – an environment of concrete and steel, a cold environment of harsh and bleak surroundings. This is my experience. This is the "nature: that surrounds me everyday.
But it is beautiful.
Like many of us, I live in an urban environment, and seek to find the beauty of it. How do we make the concrete and steel beautiful? How do we maintain a humane existence within an environment that is so naturally inhumane? If anything, this is what I seek in photography – to find beauty within the urban environment.
And lest you feel that I am down on nature. I am not. I like taking photos of trees, lakes, wildlife, and mountains. In fact, you will find many of those on my Web site. Like I said, they are pretty.
