I started self employment back in 1980 and was basically self taught, a process that ever stops and of course am still self teaching and developing my skills working mostly in the Advertising, Architecture, Corporate and Travel fields.
Through the early 1980's I was fascinated with still life incorporating in camera tricks such as multiple exposures , in camera masking and layering images etc. The work methods often utilised included model making and set building . I also spent some time in London where I met with many photographers mostly in the still life / special effects area and this time was very inspirational. Photographers such as Sam Haskins where great to meet and helped mould my style.
Along with the commercial work I have always shot travel images for both myself and Stock. Many trips to Europe over the years and I have spent many months in Paris enjoying the pulse of the City and its Art . This time further moulding my personal work. I have often reworked images over and over with sometimes the final result being many steps away from the original, doing this for the fun of it , often interesting to see where it leads.
I love to be in Cities such as Paris, Prague or Venice and enjoy the moods or ambience of a place and its people as I try to put this onto film.
The world of Advertising, Corporate and Architecture is still where most of the commercial work comes from but I am continually working with my travel images scanning, filing and working towards a saleable body of work for Stock and publishing products such as Cards.
Now days Photoshop is of course the chosen method for montage,s etc , so I currently work in the digital area using my high end scanner but still capture the images on film.
I have worked on two books one on the Pacific and more recently a book about New Zealand Truck Drivers, this being a great road trip enjoying time experiencing other peoples lives.
Currently I work out of a fully equipped Studio in Auckland New Zealand where other interests outside photography and travel include sailing and driving and working on my two classic cars.
The dream is to travel more finding new inspirations to creating new works, the being there is as important as the shooting.
