Born in Holland, I studied a diploma of Fine Arts at the South Australian school of arts in Adelaide, South Australia from 1968 to 1971, where i was introduced to photograph, though majored in Painting. Prior to this I had also studied many other arts related subjects part time including fashion drawing and design and worked as a lingerie designer for a year amongst other things.
Had my first painting exhibition in1973, after which I fell pregnant…….got into baby pics………set up a darkroom and never looked back. I practiced and experimented for 2 years and landed myself in the freelancing world by accident, working in the Film industry as a stills photographer. In 1977 I had my first showing as a photographer in a group show. Was singled out very favourably by the critic and my confidence was boosted . I exhibited again in four more group shows over the next three years and in 1980 I had my first solo show , followed by another in early 1981. During those last 4 years I was also teaching various art classes.
I then travelled to Europe and landed myself a job travelling with and documenting the Dutch Theatre Group ‘KISS’. On returning to Australia in mid 1982, I toured an exhibition of this work in several spaces over Australia, where the group was performing. When in Sydney I was interviewed by the great master of Australian photography, MAX DUPAIN and hailed
as “blessed with golden fingers” in his crit. It was very rewarding .
I returned to Adelaide, ran several photographic b/w workshops ,back into freelancing in the film industry and other arts related areas. By this stage I was heavily experimenting in the darkroom with overlays, but only b/w’s, with toning /hand painting etc. and these I exhibited. Had 2 more shows and in 1986 moved to Sydney, Australia to further my career.
In 1990 I had my first show with transparency overlays and some b/w’s. I was totally engrossed in the technique and obsessed by the colour collision and its tendency to create a new dimension that fulfilled my imagination and artistic talent.
In Sydney I continue as a freelance photographer with many clients in theatre, portraiture, film, entertainment, community and documentary areas. I have now had several shows here and am currently preparing for another, with the possibility of a show in New York. I will be there in June to liaise and discuss.
Personal statement:
“Drawing my inspiration from mythology and nature, my creativity stems from my lust for finding and exploring sympathies between the human body and natural textures. Using the technique of sandwhiching stills, I create new visual and emotional dimensions, often painterly and surreal. A pantheon of contemporary mythological beings, charged with sensuality and tinged with more than a hint of eroticism”……………….……
