Dan Baumbach has been taking photographs since his teens. He started out shooting black and white candid photos of people on the street in his native New York City.
After college, Dan got a job as an assistant to a top advertising photographer and during the next five years worked for many of the top illustration and fashion photographers of the day. Eventually, Dan opened up his own studio and worked for clients as diverse as Gentleman’s Quarterly and Young and Rubicam.
After leaving New York City and settling in California, Dan was constantly struck by the incredible natural beauty of the state. At first he just wanted to bring home a record of a landscape that moved him. He found, however, that no matter how good a photographic record he was able to reproduce, that they never captured the experience of being there. So Dan moved from merely make snapshots of a landscape to instead capturing the experience of being there. His photographs became less literal and more emotional.
Dan now lives in Fairfax, CA and spends his time trying to capture the natural beauty of this land.
