Gary's work in photography began while he was a student at Humboldt State University, majoring in psychology and theater. After graduating from HSU, Gary landed a job as manager of the Stock Department of Mountain Light Photography - the studio of world famous nature photographer, Galen Rowell. It was during Gary's nine years (1990-1999) as Rowell's Stock manager, working with some of the world's best known advertising agencies, magazines, and publishers, that he gained the experience and education needed to succeed professionally in this very difficult field.

Given Gary's relatively long tenure as Rowell's Stock Department manager, it is no small wonder why our staff immediately linked the style of Gary's own images to that of Rowell's. Our first impression of Gary's work while visiting his website was, "Wow! These images are very similar to Galen Rowell's!" It was during this first visit to Gary's website, when one of our staff members consulted his biography page and learned of the close connection between Gary and Galen. The similarity in styles between Gary and Galen is truly incredible - both have perfected the landscape photography image through their masterful use of light, color and composition. To have two photographers of this caliber under one roof at Mountain Light must have been an amazing time!
